Why Add a UV Light to Your AC System?

October 24, 2026 admin No Comments

Florida’s humidity is great for plants and not so great for the inside of your air conditioner. The indoor coil of your AC is cool and wet much of the time, which can make it a welcoming place for mold, mildew, and bacteria to grow. One popular way to help with that is an HVAC UV light. Here’s what it does, what it doesn’t do, and whether it’s a good fit for your home.

How a UV Light Works

An HVAC UV light is installed inside your system, usually near the indoor coil or in the air handler. It uses ultraviolet light (UV-C) to help limit the growth of mold and other microorganisms on the surfaces it shines on. Because the coil and drain pan stay damp, these areas tend to benefit most.

The light runs quietly in the background. You don’t see it or hear it in your living space.

Why It Makes Sense in Florida

Tampa Bay’s humid climate means AC systems run often and pull lots of moisture from the air. That constant moisture on the coil is exactly what microbial growth needs. When growth builds up on a coil, it can:

  • Restrict airflow and make the system work harder
  • Contribute to musty odors when the AC runs
  • Add to buildup that can affect drainage

By helping keep the coil surface cleaner, a UV light can support better system performance between regular maintenance visits.

What a UV Light Doesn’t Do

We want to be straight with you. A UV light is a helpful add-on, but it isn’t a cure-all:

  • It doesn’t replace your air filter. You still need to change filters regularly.
  • It doesn’t replace regular professional maintenance.
  • It won’t fix a humidity problem caused by an oversized system or leaky ducts.
  • It mostly works on surfaces it shines on, not every particle in your home’s air.

Think of it as one piece of a good indoor comfort plan, alongside clean filters, a clear drain line, sealed ducts, and regular tune-ups.

Signs a UV Light Might Help You

You might consider one if:

  • You notice a musty smell when the AC kicks on
  • Your technician has found growth on your coil or in the drain pan
  • Your drain line clogs often
  • You simply want an extra layer of care for your system in a humid climate

Maintenance Is Simple

UV bulbs don’t last forever, and they lose strength over time even if they still glow. They need to be replaced on the schedule the manufacturer recommends. Because UV-C light can harm your eyes and skin, bulb changes should be handled with care, with the system off. Your technician can take care of it during a maintenance visit.
